Our hens are settling into College.
The year 8 boys are dutifully caring for them by checking their food and water every morning during weekdays.
Students particularly look forward to collecting the eggs and delivering them to the Food Technology Room, where they are used in either cooking classes or the Canteen.
Western Australian Waste Authority made it possible for us to house the chickens through their Waste Wise Schools program. Last year, Mundaring Christian College was awarded a grant for the chicken coop, feeders, storage bins and compost bins, in order to divert our food waste from landfill. The chickens help by eating some of the food scraps and their manure provides the nitrogen needed to help turn organic waste into rich compost.
All with the added benefit of fresh eggs!
