On Monday morning, a gathering of amazing mad scientists resplendent in white lab coats, bow ties, thick glasses and wigs, joined Dr Chaninator and Professor Cornish for The Fun Factory WOW Day.
The day started with students reflecting on God’s wonderful creation and our journey to discover the rules that have been set by Him.
The famous Coke and Mentos experiment was held on the lawn with some seriously incredible eruptions occurring. Students also discussed the importance of keeping experiments and tests fair, in order to have conclusive and accurate results. After that, there was Oobleck (inspired by Dr Seuss) to be made from cornflour, water and food colouring. This non-Newtonian fluid defies the logic of fluid and solid. This mixture was kept in a zip lock bag but at least two managed to ceremoniously escape!
Year 4 students were challenged to construct the tallest tower from newspaper and masking tape. They discussed about how materials can have different characteristics if certain design elements were applied. They also spoke about how resources are limited and the importance of not wasting anything. Year 3 students continued the fun with experiments involving an array of slime concoctions. Some of these worked, but others did not. There were plenty of questions and a huge amount of fun.
After lunch, we folded and tested paper planes. This is something College students have enjoyed over the past thirty years! The day culminated in the gym with our Paper Plane competition. Bailey W was the Year 3 Champion while Jensen B took out the Year 4 title.
Everyone is looking forward to our upcoming Science Fair when individual projects will be on display for everyone to enjoy. Join us in Rooms 8, 9 and 25 on Friday 29 June between 11:15 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.
