Year Five and Six Science Club

Found in: News

There is a new Science Club running from 3:30-4:30pm Wednesdays at the Mundaring Primary Campus. Students in Year Five and Six are welcome to attend. The club will start Week Three in the Science Lab, there is no cost to attend.

The goal of the club will be to foster enjoyment in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects.

In Term Three students will be doing a unit on Mechatronics and in Term Four the plan is to do some astronomy. The club times may vary in Term Four to allow for observing evenings. These evenings may be held at the Parkerville Campus.

Mechatronics is a field that brings together mechanical, electrical and electronic engineering, together with software, with the view to solving problems. These problems could be as simple as operating a washing machine, or as vast as operating a factory that produces cars.

In this unit students will start using breadboards to build electronic circuits. This will enable them to learn the basic electronic circuit theory used to design electronic control systems. Students will then integrate microprocessors into their circuits in order to demonstrate the power of computers to control devices. The unit will conclude with students building and programming robots to perform tasks.

Students doing the Term Three Mechatronics club will need to bring their charged iPad with the SPRK Lightning Lab for sphero installed. This is a free app. Available from the iTunes App Store.

Places are limited, so please email Mr Peter Adams petera@scea.wa.edu.au to reserve a spot in the Term Three club. Places will be allocated on a ‘first in first serve basis’.  Mr Adams will confirm places with a reply to your email.
