Self-Defence (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) Kicks Off at MCC

This term, students at MCC have begun their journey into Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) as part of our new self-defence subject. With a focus on practical skills and real-world application, students have been learning the fundamentals of takedowns, position control and wrestling.

Leading the program is our Black Belt Professor in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Mr Matt Bright, who also assists in coaching at the Academy of Mixed Martial Arts under Professor Adam Metcalf. His expertise and experience provide students with high-level instruction, ensuring they develop strong technical skills in a safe and supportive environment.

BJJ is often described as the “gentle art,” emphasizing technique, leverage, and strategy over brute strength. Throughout the lessons, students have been developing confidence, discipline, and resilience while gaining valuable self-defence skills. Each session challenges them physically and mentally, reinforcing the importance of perseverance and problem-solving under pressure.

It’s been fantastic to see students engage enthusiastically, pushing themselves out of their comfort zones and supporting each other in their learning. The team looks forward to refining techniques and exploring more advanced grappling aspects as the term progresses.
