Year 9 Digital Tech Students Explore Cybersecurity and Encryption

Earlier this term, our Digital Technologies class had the opportunity to welcome Peter Owens from TAFE, who led a lesson on different software and data encryption. Peter was a friendly and enlightening personality, and as he led us through a small booklet of instructions, he would stop at each step to give explanations on what we were doing, what it meant, and why it worked. We also had the chance to ask questions. It was a unique lesson compared to the year so far in DT, as we got to experience using Kali Linux, a branch of the Linux operating system that we hadn’t been introduced to before.

Peter was very experienced with the topic, and that allowed us to delve into more complex topics, such as how to make our internet networks more secure and even explore careers in cybersecurity, social media, and the development of artificial intelligence. All in all, we learnt a lot and were given a large amount of useful information in a way that made it easier to understand and apply to our lives and work.
